NEWS - Meet the Expert 2010

"Meet the Expert" is intended to promote research facilitation and interaction between early and advanced career scientists. This initiative provides all researchers at the EHPS Conference especially young researchers with the opportunity to consult with leading scientists in their field of their interest. The sessions take place in the morning of the first conference day, Wednesday, 1st September , 2010 at Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

This year, flowing four experts have kindly agreed to facilitate this event:
Prof. Michelle Fine (US), Prof. Michael Murray (UK), Prof. Suzanne Segerstrom (US), and Prof. Bas Verplanken (UK).

The above key scientists are willing to pass on their knowledge and experience will be there in order to:

  • assist young researchers plan a research project.
  • provide young scientists with information and resources relevant to the needs of their current research work. Participants may be provided with useful materials and tools, as well as advice concerning the overcoming of specific obstacles they may be facing.
  • provide young researchers with ideas about collaborations and networking opportunities.
  • provide guidance for publishing in scientific journals.

  • The consultation sessions will be 30-minutes long and either one-on-one or in small groups from 9:00 to 12:00, at the conference venue. Participants are asked to send in some information about themselves and their study and prepare some questions in advance. This would help the experts prepare for and make best use of the sessions.

  • Youth and injustice in schools, communities and prisons.
  • Critical inquiry, social theory and the politics of social justice for youth.
  • Participatory action research.

  • Critical psychology - critical social psychological approach to the study of health, illness, ageing and well-being
  • Qualitative methods - arts-based approach and health
  • Action research
  • Community psychology - social representation and narrative theory

  • Professor Suzanne Segerstrom - University of Kentucky, US

  • Personality, cognition, and emotion on the physiological effects of stressors.
  • Self-regulation of cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, and immune function
  • Longitudinal study design
  • The effects of repetitive thought on psychological and physical health in older adults

  • Professor Bas Verplanken, University of Bath, UK

  • Habitual behaviours including mental habits and negative thinking.
  • Self-related processes (attitudes and attitude-behavior relations), self-esteem, and self-regulation.
  • Health, consumer, and environmental behaviours.
  • Body image.

Sessions will be allocated to ensure a geographical spread with participants from wide rage of backgrounds. Priority will be given to EHPS members and students members. We will inform you of the outcome by 6th August.
