EHPS-UN Committee – History

Mission Statement

The goal of the EHPS UN Committee is to support the EHPS to collaborate in the application of health psychology to meet the global challenges of the UN agenda, and in particular those detailed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The EHPS UN Committee sits under the EHPS Executive Committee. This committee as emerged since the EHPS was granted special consultative status in the Economic and Social Council at the UN (ECOSOC).  In this role the EHPS can consult with Member States and the United Nations system at large, based on our expertise. This consultative status also enables ECOSOC or one of its bodies to seek expert information or advice from the EHPS so long as based on our subject matter.

EHPS and the UN

On April 29th 2011 the EHPS was formally associated with the United Nations – the Division of Public Information/ NGO section of the UN in New York. This solidifies EHPS’ association with the UN and its principles, goals and activities.

Special consultative status at the UN

In April 2015 the EHPS was granted special consultative status in the Economic and Social Council at the UN (ECOSOC). In this role, EHPS can “consult with Member States and the United Nations system at large, based on the nature and scope of work that your organization undertakes. Consultative relationship with NGOs also enables the Council or one of its bodies to seek expert information or advice from organizations with special competence in a subject matter”.

Active @ Psychology Coalition of NGOs having consultative status with the UN ECOSOC (PCUN)

EHPS members are now actively attending PCUN monthly meetings and connecting with other professional psychological societies which are also associated with the United Nations, such as: American Psychological Association (APA), the International Association for Applied Psychology (IAAP), the International Council of Psychologists (ICP), the International Union of Psychological Sciences (IUPsyS), the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) and others. These psychology organizations have formed the Psychology Coalition at the UN.

EHPS current representation at the UN

Six EHPS members are appointed as representatives to the UN:  Irina Todorova, Vera Araujo Soares, Efrat Neter, Vica Tomberge, Philipp Kadel, Josianne Kollmann.   Most of the representatives are currently working in New York City, and attend monthly briefings, conferences, meetings with UN officials, and other activities at UN headquarters.
