Practical Health Psychology Blog
Health psychology is a relatively young and still developing discipline in Turkey. There is no formally established national structure dedicated exclusively to health psychology, and activities in this field are carried out within broader psychological, academic, and healthcare settings. Research and applied work tend to focus on health behaviour, chronic disease management, health promotion, and the psychosocial dimensions of illness. These activities take place primarily in university settings, in collaboration with healthcare institutions and public health bodies.
At present, no national health psychology organization exists in Turkey. Health psychologists operate within general professional and academic structures rather than a dedicated discipline-specific body. Professionals and researchers with an interest in health psychology connect with the field through their institutional affiliations and through international networks, including the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS).
Psychologists working in health psychology are generally represented by the Turkish Psychological Association, the national body for psychology professionals. The TPA covers psychologists across applied and research fields, including clinical and health-related subfields, and health psychology activities are conducted under its broader organizational umbrella rather than through a distinct subgroup or division. In addition, health psychology-related work involves collaboration with healthcare institutions, university research units, and public health bodies.
Psychology education and training in Turkey are delivered across a large number of universities, with graduate programmes varying considerably in their orientation toward health-related topics. At present, the only doctoral programme explicitly focused on health psychology is the PhD Clinical Health Psychology at Istanbul University. No standalone graduate programme dedicated exclusively to health psychology currently exists in the country. Health psychology content is typically embedded within clinical psychology training or addressed through individual research projects, rather than offered as a coherent programme of study in its own right.
Research and psychology-related projects in Turkey are primarily funded through national public research and innovation funding bodies, most notably the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), as well as government institutions and European research programmes. Funding for health-related psychological research is typically obtained within broader interdisciplinary or public health funding frameworks, rather than through discipline-specific health psychology schemes.
